  • Comparing seven card stud hi-lo to omaha hi-lo

stud hilo omaha hiloApril, 2021 - Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo and Omaha Hi Lo are two excellent poker variations that require some key strategy adjustments and considerations in order to be successful. While the games have some similarities there are fundamental mechanical differences in each game that set them apart. In each game, players are trying to make their best five card high hand and their best five card low hand. In both games in order to qualify for a low hand players must have five cards all of different rank and all must be an eight or less. I will try and answer the Stud Hi Lo Vs Omaha Hi Lo question in this article.

    Which game to play?

Each game is best suited to a particular type of player. With that in mind you may find that you have the skills necessary to be good at one of the games but maybe not so much the other. Arguably Seven Card stud Hi Lo is the harder game and requires more concentration and observation. At the same point, it generally isn’t as wild and crazy betting wise as Omaha Hi Lo. Here are some things you should consider when trying to figure out which game to play:

Seven Card stud Hi Lo requires a great deal of concentration and memorization. You need to watch your opponents board cards very carefully and then be able to make deductions and calculated moves base on them. You also need to be able to recall cards that have been folded. If you find it hard to pay attention and can’t commit cards well to memory then you might want to try Omaha Hi Lo.

Omaha Hi Lo can be a very aggressive game filled with lots of betting and raising. You’ll need to make sure you have a bankroll that can handle the variance, and the guts to be able to withstand a lot of action. If you are playing on scared money or simply can’t handle aggressive games filled with betting and raising then you might want to stay away from Omaha Hi Lo.

    Mechanical differences

There are obvious mechanical differences between the two games. In Omaha Hi Lo there will be five community cards in the middle of the table at the end of a hand. These cards are for all players to use and construct the best possible low hand and the best possible high hand. In Seven Card Stud Hi Lo players do not share any community cards, rather each player will end up with Seven Cards from which to make their hand. Four of the cards will be face up and three cards will be face down. The first two cards dealt are face down and the last card dealt is face down. In Omaha Hi Lo each player is dealt four cards of their own, but there are special rules on how they can be used. Each player must use exactly two cards from their hand and exactly three cards from the board of community cards. There is no exception to this. The good news however is that players can use two different cards from their hand of four to make each their high and low hand. The same thing goes for the community cards in that you can use three different cards for each the low and high hand. I feel that Stud strategy is a bit harder to learn but the payoff is better.
