The history of the stud poker card games
February, 2012 - Until the recent poker explosion, Seven Card Stud poker was the game of choice among nearly all brick and mortar poker rooms. While the prestige and excitement of no limit Texas hold’em has certainly pushed Seven Card Stud out of the drivers seat for now, this game has a storied past in the United States and is one of the most traditional and entertaining forms of poker. While the exact history of how Seven Card Stud came to be is gray, we’ll take our best shot at uncovering the history of this great card game. The origins of the actual game of poker most likely come from two separate sources. The idea behind the name poker seems to originate from a French game called Poque, although the actual game play is not very similar. More closely related in actual play and structure is a Persian game called Nas. It is thought that the combination of these two games might have been the ingredients for the game we know today as Poker. Although the very root of the game might have come from European or other influences, most forms of poker, including Seven Card Stud, are purely American.
Seven Card Studs origins
Poker became popular in the United States in the 1830’s where it was played on riverboats in New Orleans. The game was commonly used by sly con artists to cheat tourists out of their money, which may be another hint to the origin of the name as tourists gambling money was commonly referred to as “pokes.”
It wasn’t until the mid to late 1800’s during the civil war that Seven Card Stud and other forms of Stud poker became popular. The game is thought to have originated somewhere in the Midwest, but no one can be certain. The spread of Seven Card Stud and other forms of poker to the rest of the world is commonly attributed to the United States military. Poker was the game of choice for America’s military and it was especially popular for the men of the navy.
Seven Card Stud grew in popularity through the 1900’s and became the poker game of choice for most American’s. The game was popular at home gatherings and was clearly the dominant game of choice at America’s casinos. Only in the 1980’s when Texas hold’em became popular did Seven Card Stud lose its position as America’s favorite card game. Despite Texas hold’em and Omaha’s immense popularity these days doesn’t mean you can find a game of Seven Card Stud. It is still the preferred game of choice for the older generation and as poker players have become more saturated with hold’em and other community poker games, they have gravitated back to the game it all started with, Seven Card Stud.
Seven Card Stud can be found in nearly every live casino card room today and is undoubtedly available at every online poker site currently available. It is a true thinkers game and one of the more difficult forms of poker to learn and master.
The future of 7 card stud - 2012 and beyond

In the years to come I think that Stud will pick up more new players than any other card game, relatively speaking.
