razz poker strategyIf you are just starting to play Razz poker, it is time to apply a beginner Razz Poker strategy. There are many elements that come together to develop a solid winning Razz Poker strategy, but attempting to employ them all at once is incredibly difficult, especially for novices. For this reason, we have developed a three-part Razz Poker Strategy Guide. In this first segment, we will go over all of the important Razz Poker Strategies for Beginners. These include the importance of starting at the lowest limits, obeying a strict Razz Starting hand strategy, and proper betting methods on subsequent streets. I have added some links to our other Stud Poker strategy articles below.

We’re going to assume that you already know the rules of Razz Poker. However, if you need to read over the rules, you can do so here: Razz Poker Rules.

The Leading Razz Poker Rooms - The downside to playing Razz is that there are very few online poker rooms that offer decent real money Razz action around the clock. On this web site I only recommend two rooms and I provide screenshots of the traffic so you don't have to worry about getting tricked into signing up at a room with no Razz action (poker webmasters do it all of the time). Pokerstars and Full Tilt Poker have over 100 Razz players at the tables during peak hours. Most of the action can be found at the micro, small and medium stakes ring tables but high stakes Razz action isn't uncommon. Each room offers a $600 bonus but the bonus offer at Pokerstars is much better for players that do not intend on depositing the full $600. Our exclusive offer will enable you to receive a 100% match on not only your first deposit but your second and third. This way you can make three smaller deposits and have each bonus combine. More info on this special bonus offer can be found in our reviews.

Beginner Razz Poker Strategy – Starting with Low Stakes

As a beginner Razz Poker player, it is extremely important to start out at the lowest stakes. The higher the stakes are, the fiercer the competition will be. Low limit Razz Poker often reveals loose, inexperienced opposition that is easier to overcome. You need to develop a winning Razz Poker strategy at the lowest limits before attempting to take on the big boys. If you like to take advantage of the juicy overlays most Razz tournaments offer please read our Razz Poker tournament strategy guide.

Beginner Razz Poker Strategy – Razz Starting Hand Selection

We’ve already written a previous article – found here: Razz Starting Hand Selection – which can help you to practice and memorize the best Starting Hands in Razz Poker. New players must stand by a strict Starting Hand procedure if they wish to make a profit playing Razz Poker. The number one mistake made by novice players is staying in a hand too long with marginal holdings at best. This results in a steady outflow of chips, with winning pots few and far between. Do not let yourself become bored and make this mistake. If you find yourself becoming bored and frustrated with a string of bad Starting Hands, find a distraction. This is easiest at online poker room, where you can open another browser window and keep yourself occupied with side games or other web sites.

Beginner Razz Poker Strategy – Betting on Streets

As a novice Razz Poker player, it is more difficult to read your opponents and place proper bets on instinct. Instead, it is recommended to follow strict street betting habits, based on your holdings.

Below is a list of all Streets, and what your hand should consist of in order to consider moving forward. If your hand does not comply with the Street and Minimum Holdings listed below, Fold and wait for something better to come along.

    • 4th Street: 3 Cards of 8 or below.
    • 5th Street: 4 Cards of 9 or below. Remember the stakes double at this point.
    • 6th Street: 5 Cards of 9 or below – or - 4 Wheel Cards (A-5) with an Ace included.
    • 7th Street: This is the final Street – you now have your complete hand. You should be able to determine the strength of this hand by observing the face-up cards of your opponent(s). For example, if you have a 9-High hand, and your opponent is showing 3 cards of 9 or higher, you know you have won, or will split the pot at the least. In the same token, if another payer is showing 4 cards lower than 9, it’s safe to assume you’ve lost. Take a close look at the face up cards on the table and use your best judgment in deciding whether to press on or save your chips for a better hand.

With a little practice, this Beginner Razz Poker Strategy should become second nature to you, and your winnings should substantially outweigh any losses.
