Pokerstars To Host Record Breaking Tournament

Pokerstars recently announced that they will be attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the largest poker tournament. This record is based on the number of player’s participating in the event, not the prize pool. Pokerstars has held the world record almost exclusively in the last few years with the exception of a few hours back in July when FullTilt Poker held the record. Some quick thinking and cut-throat marketing from Pokerstars ensured that they would take record back only a few hours later though.

Currently the record is 65,000 players. Pokerstars is most likely going to put the record well out of Full Tilt Poker’s reach so that they won’t have to worry about any challengers for the next few years.

The tournament has guaranteed prize pool of $300,000. The only real challenge Poker Stars will face is technical in nature. They will probably have an 30-40% increase in traffic during the tournament. During peak hours they boast over 250,000 players on an average day which is an amazing achievement in it’s own right.

On December 27th at 14:45 ET the tournament will begin. I’m guessing that Pokerstars will cap the tournament at 100,000 players so the overlay will be $200,000…I could be wrong though. In any event though they won’t be able to hit the 300,000 player mark so an overlay is guaranteed. The first place prize for this event is a cool $50,000 and the tournament will pay the top 30,000 players.

This event only costs $1 to enter and you can even win a seat via satellites that cost as little as 5 FPP or $.10.
