  • Managing an Online Poker Bankroll

    January 21st, 2010 by Nicole

One of the biggest skills that any 7 Card Stud poker player must possess is the ability to manage their bankroll and maintain focused on doing so. Failure to remain focused on your bankroll is the main downfall of so many new players who take to the virtual poker tables.

It is a well known fact that a poker players bankroll strongly dictates not only the stakes of play that the player can entertain but also how a player will approach a situation while playing a hand.

An example of this would be a player who has had a rough time at the tables and has lost a significant amount of their funds will be less likely to take a risk than if their session was profitable up to that point due to the fear of losing more funds.

Many players who begin to start their poker playing experience online have revealed that a large factor to them being willing to invest a large amount of their money into an online poker room is that fact that there is such a big return should they win at the tables.

So what are the 4 main points that you need to remember when you are trying to manage your bankroll effectively?

    Stay within your limits

One of the biggest downfalls of a number of poker players who ihave freshly deposited into an online poker room is the fact that their desire to win big money in a short amount of time sees them heading to a table that is too rich for their investment.

There are no set guidelines as to what stakes a player should look to play depending on their investment but players should remember that poker is a game that can go in may ways, so placing their whole bankroll onto a table is not recommended.

Taking your whole bankroll into a poker game means that should you have a bad session, you will find yourself with nothing left in your account and the need to re-deposit into the site before you can look to recover your losses.

    Maintain your bankroll mentality

The whole aim of playing online poker is to be successful and to turn a profit from your initial investment but it has to be remembered that while being sat at a poker table there is a huge possibility that you are going to come across players who are stronger than you or that you will run into a spell of bad luck where the cards just don’t seem to want to fall for you.

A number of players fail to remember this and so their losses lead them into a situation where they lose their head and forget about their bankroll management, flooding more funds into their session with a desire to win their chips back.

The correct mentality that you should be looking to adapt is that you have the ability to forget about your previous losses and maintain a strong poker mentality where your decisions are un-detered by past hands, keeping your poker play strong and stable.

If you find that you are unable to stay within a winning poker mindset it is highly recommended that you take a break from the tables, regroup your head and let the negative vibes pass through before heading back.

Doing this will mean that you will have a better chance to play your game successfully and most importantly will mean that your judgement will not be clouded by the fact that you have lost a certain amount of your bankroll.

Remain focused on the game in hand

Online poker has a huge following all over the world and many of the big money players spend a huge amount of their time sat at their computers looking to take their opponents money from under their noses.

If you enter into a game without the right level of focus, you will find that your play will suffer, causing your bankroll to take a hit.

Two of the biggest distractions from a players game are tiredness and when they enter into a ’tilt’ frame of mind.

Avoiding the poker tables when you are tired speaks for itself, should you look to play while you are tired you will be more likely to try to play the game too quickly, pushing hands that you would not normally play so aggressively.

A player enters into a ’tilt’ frame of mind when they have experienced a large scale loss, it could be that they have been rivered by someone who entered into a pot with nothing or it could be that they have just seen their pocket aces fall to a low pocket pair.

The knock on effect of losses like this can have a huge impact on a poker players bankroll. Failure to be able to break this mindset will see players losing the whole of their bankrolls.

Take a step back away from the computer and give yourself a break, doing so will mean that your judgement will be restored and you can be back to your best.

Play your poker in a suitable location

We have all fallen short of this tip at least once and have then realised that we aren’t going to be subject to it again.

When you play poker online, you should be in a position that you are willing to spend a number of hours in because a successful poker session will see you sat at your computer for a number of hours.

Failure to make sure that you are comfortable while playing means that your concentration on the game will be broken, something that can be costly at the best of times.

You could find that you need to adjust your seat or your posture and find that you have missed how a player has handled their action, did they quickly call a raise? Did they have to request time to make the call? Both of these small actions reveal a large amount of information to experienced players.

Keep both your head and your eyes on the game at all times while your playing and you will find that you begin to see patterns within your opponents play, something that you can use against them for your financial gain.
