UTWMW6QYF2RB – Pokerstars and Full Tilt Poker were in a heated battle over who has the most innovative poker games. That all changed when Full Tilt was shut down. That hasn’t stopped Poker Stars from developing new poker games though. Time Tournaments are problem the hottest online poker news right now. These new tournaments are not brand new games; they are just a new way to play in multi-table tournaments. Imagine a poker tournament with a 30 minute time limit. These events are not only fun but they can be more profitable than regular poker tournaments.
These new tourneys are only a few days old but hundreds of thousands of players have already played in at least one of them. Time limits on tournaments will need to be played very differently compared to other tournaments. I really can’t wait until Pokerstars starts offering Time Tourneys in poker games other than Texas Hold’em.
This new tourney format comes in several different time lengths. The shortest Time Tourneys last for only 15 minutes and the longest run for 180 minutes. There are four other levels in between: 30, 60, 90 & 120 minutes.
Once the time runs out Pokerstars will basically just pay the chip leaders. Time tournaments are already being debated at countless poker forums and in the comments at poker news sites.
Seasoned tournament players have already started criticizing these new games. They obviously lose most of the edge they usually have over average poker players. The same thing happened when Full Tilt Poker launched Rush Poker. These tournaments favor the vast majority of players so I think that they are very cool. You will have to adjust to the crazy betting habits when you play in a Time Tournament.
Let’s say you have an average stack in a 30 minute tournament. What are you going to do when there are only 3 minutes left? If you stick to a tight playing style you will basically just throw away your chance at hitting the prize pool. What if the remaining hands are all low quality though? Do you go all-in with a hand like 3-8 off suit?
You won’t be able to steal the blinds because many other low to medium stacks will have to win a big pot in order to cash so you will definitely have to hope that lady luck smiles on you.
These tournaments are much more complex than you might image at a glance. Let’s say you rank 28th in a tournament that pays the top 32 and there are only a few minutes left. Since all-ins will likely happen every hand you could easily find yourself bumped down to the 40-50′s if you don’t play any hands.
My advice would be to play very aggressively until you are in the top 25% of the prize pool. More chips are going to change hands in the last few minutes of the tournament than the first 27 minutes for a 30 minute Time Tourney.
