The mobile gambling industry has been around for several years but I think that 2011 was the year that the industry really took off. The reasons for the rise in popularity can be attributed to the development of new mobile gambling apps, new tablet/phone technologies and the decreased cost for mobile gaming compatible devices. It seems like everyone has an iPhone or comparable device these days. Most online poker rooms and casinos have developed or are currently in the process of developing an app for mobile gamblers.
Online casinos have definitely put more effort into mobile gaming compared to online poker sites. Poker players have some decent options; casino gamblers simply have more places to choose from. Some industry experts have predicted that mobile casino gambling will overtake regular online casino gambling within the next five years. That seems like a stretch but when I look at how quickly mobile devices and gambling apps have evolved I guess anything is possible. The 2 pound monsters like the one posted to the right isn’t really that old when you think about it. Imagine where we will be in five years?
The Apple iPhone is currently the most popular device for mobile online gambling. There are many apps available on iPhones using the popular Android operating system.
2011 may have been a big year for mobile gaming but 2012 is sure to be a year of massive growth. Online poker sites will likely catch up to the casino industry in the mobile gambling field. Other online gaming sectors will also enter into the competition. I have already heard of several online sports books that have developed mobile betting apps. I think these will be very popular because of another innovation from 2011.
In-play betting is a somewhat new service offered by bookmakers that allows bettors to place wagers while a game is in progress. In-play betting apps for mobile devices are truly a match made in heaven.
Several online bingo sites have also created mobile gaming applications. A large percentage of women have smart phones so I think that the mobile bingo industry will see a massive spike in popularity in 2012. Online real money bingo is viewed much differently than online poker or casino gambling and that will play a part too.
Another mobile gambling sector is real money skill gaming. People love playing games on their phones so upping the ante and playing for money will be an easy transition. Not that many years ago the most entertaining thing to do on a cell phone was to play somewhat generic games. These games were comparable to the games available on systems like Nintendo and Atari. My personal favorite was the snake game.
Nowadays everything is possible on a mobile device. High speed connections enable mobile betting app developers to use HD quality graphics. There are even 3D mobile casino games that you can play on the 3D-ready phones being marketed in 2011.
There is one thing that I would really like to see in the mobile gaming industry in 2012. Live dealer casinos also saw a lot of growth in 2011. These casinos use webcam feeds that enable you to watch real dealers handle the cards and dice in real time. A mobile gaming app for a live dealer casino would really be amazing. You would be able to receive an authentic brick and mortar casino experience while you are on the train or on your lunch break.
Gambling on mobile devices is one of several major online gaming innovations that will continue to grow and thrive in 2012. The others include live dealer casino games, 3D poker and casino gambling and webcam poker. Mobile gambling will be the leading new feature in 2012 in my opinion.
