Poker has always been a favorite past-time for Americans. It is a popular theme in virtually every “Old West” movie and many newer movies. Around a decade ago “poker night” moved online and it has grown from an online poker room with a handful of tables to rooms with millions of hands played every day. American poker rooms are not as numerous as they were a couple years ago but you will not suffer from lack of options. Many of the best online poker rooms accept Americans and there has been a lot of talk recently about legalizing online poker on the federal level. Poker players from the U.S.A. are actually not breaking any laws when they play online for real money, at least that is how I interpret the current laws. The same is true for people that play at U.S. online casinos.
The American government knew that they could never stop people from playing poker online. I think they learned their lesson from prohibition. So instead of going after the tens of millions of Americans that play each year the government decided to create some laws that prohibit banks from processing transactions to and from online poker sites. This happened in 2006 and the banking industry immediately said that it could not comply with these new rules. It’s five years later and the money is still flowing. Americans may have a little trouble making deposits at some rooms and payouts may take a little longer than one would prefer but in the end you can play real money poker anytime you want without fearing any repercussions.
Most Americans have played poker for money at home games, bars and at casinos. In 2001 there were 613 entries at the World Series of Poker Main Event. In 2011 there were 6,865 entries, more than a 1,000% increase. Most of these players won their seats at American online poker sites.
There are some important things that Americans should know before they start playing online poker. Many beginners think that it must be rigged but I’m going to explain why it is not. The poker rooms make more money from someone playing small stakes poker for 30 minutes than they would from a player that lost $10,000 in a single hand. When you win a tournament or do well at a cash table you are not taking the poker room’s money. Online poker rooms collect a tiny portion from each pot and that is their source of income. Their only goal is to keep you happy and keep you playing, They use advanced computer programs to make each game completely random, just like when you play with a deck of cards only without the possibility of stacking the deck, bottom dealing or simply catching a glimpse of someone else’s cards while they are being dealt.
So it would be corporate suicide for a poker room to try and rig the game. All US poker rooms are monitored by one of several independent companies that test the software for fairness. These rooms are also regulated and licensed by online gaming commissions and/or the country that they are based out of.
