Listen up! That means you. You’re here because you want to play some 7 card stud. Chances are, you want to make some money while you do it. Playing stud can provide you with a lucrative side income. Hell, if you’re good enough, it can become your full-time job. But you’ve got to know how to go about doing it the right way.
Do you like excitement? Risk? There’s nothing like the thrill of the draw… Rolling the dice, getting lucky… Winning a close pot… When it happens, it feels pretty good. Right?
Right. But check it out- it’s much more profitable to play a solid, patient game of poker than it is to chase draws. You’ll win more money in the long term if you adopt a winning strategy. Getting lucky can only take you so far.
Consider this- most poker pros aim to make only one big bet per hour. Just one! Why do they aim for that particular rate? It’s simple. They know that it’s a controlled risk way to make a good buck. A 7 card stud player who’s making one big bet per hour is playing a pretty conservative game. You can bet he’s always getting the best of it when the money goes in. He controls his risk, and his variance. As a result, he can count on a stable income.
I know that this flies in the face of everything you see and hear about poker pros on TV. Kids skyrocketing to riches and fame from first deposits on their parents’ credit cards. Burned-out accountants entering satellite tournaments and winning millions of dollars. Egotistical teenagers challenging each other to heads-up matches for their entire bankrolls on internet forums.
NONE of these people are long-term winners. Sure, they got lucky. They made a big score, with only a little bit of effort. That isn’t how the professional poker game goes, though. These people will burn through their winnings as fast as they stumbled into them. A pro 7 card stud player needs a steady income- not a one-time score. Just ask David Sklansky.
Hollywood and mass media sell the dream of striking it rich in just one hand. In reality, you need to feed your kids, and not everyone can win the WSOP. 1 big bet per hour is all it takes to put food on the table.
It should be obvious that by using this strategy, you aren’t going to make a living playing low limit 7 card stud. What stakes will you need to play before you can consider 7 card stud a legitimate job?
It depends on how you want to live. Think about it in terms of monetary hourly rate. If your stakes are 5/10, you’ll make $20 an hour. 25/50, you’ll make $100 an hour, and so on. Can you live off of $100 per hour? $20 per hour? It’s up to you.
Making a living off of 7 card stud is possible. It’s easy. You just need to win 1 big bet per hour at stakes high enough to support your standard of living.
That said, maybe you don’t have the cash to properly bankroll yourself for the 25/50 7 card stud game. There’s no shame in that. It shouldn’t hinder your plans. You’ll just need to dedicate yourself to grinding up your bankroll. Start low and build, just like a business. Just like anything that’s worth anything in this world, you’ve got to lay the foundation before you reap the rewards.
Whatever level you’re playing, keep it in the back of your head: 1 big bet an hour is all you need to be a winner in the 7 card stud games. Keep winning at that rate, and you’ve got a nice little income for as long as you want.
Play for the big bet.
